The ramparts are one of the most famous landmarks of Antibes. They are known to have been built by the French military engineer Vauban at the end of the 17th century. In fact, some fortifications already existed long before, notably the Fort Carré and the Bastion Saint Jaume (a bastion is a protruding part of a fortification). However, Vauban completed and modernised the entire fortification system. Two centuries later, in 1895, the city, led by its mayor Robert Soleau, decided to knock down part of the ramparts: Antibes was expanding and more than a military protection, it was in need of space. So today most of the remaining parts are the ones by the sea, which give the city its unparalleled charm.
